Manual Lymphatic Drainage MLD assists in the decongestion of a limb or body part by increasing the lymphatic flow. The technique assists post surgical oedema into alternative pathways. As a remedial technique, MLD works by the use of a very light pressure, a stretching of the skin followed by a release of the pressure which has an effect on initial lymphatic vessels, the drainage is not a massage. MLD increases the volume of lymphatic fluid through tissue pressure. Self or simple lymphatic drainage is easily learnt as a preventative strategy alleviating post surgical oedema. Early intervention produces good results. Patients who develop post surgical oedema after an Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction or Total Knee Replacement, may also benefit from manual lymphatic drainage. MLD is used as a remedial technique for sinus congestion, sporting injuries, pain management, bursitis, fluid retention associated with pregnancy, arthritis and swollen ankles. |
